Do you really know about the MPO patch cords?
In the optical communications industry we often come into contact with MPO patch cords or MPO connectors, different patch cords, connectors, how do we distinguish between them and what are their characteristics? Let’s have a good chat today…
MPO fiber optic patch cords have a place in the optical communication industry due to the advantages of multiple cores, small size, high transmission rate, etc. It can meet the high-density, high-demand cabling solutions for data centers.
1、What is MPO?
MPO (Multi-fiber Push On) fiber optic patch cord is composed of connectors and fiber optic cables, is a high-density fiber optic transmission patch cord. MPO connector for one of the MT series connectors, is a multi-core multi-channel plug-in connectors, MT series of inserts are used on the insert end of the left and right of the two 0.7mm diameter guide holes and the guide pin (also known as the PIN pins) for the precise connection.
MPO fiber optic patch cord products mainly include MPO pre-terminated fiber optic patch cords, MPO branch fiber optic patch cords, MPO sector fiber.
2、What are the common core numbers of MPO?
MPO is more commonly used in 12-core, 16-core, 24-core and 32-core.
12-core MPO fiber optic patch cords are commonly used in 40G networks, 24-core MPO fiber optic patch cords are commonly used in 100G networks, and 16/32-core MPO patch cords are the best solution for low-latency, ultra-high-speed transmission in 400G networks.
3、What is the difference between a male and female MPO connector??
MPO patch cords contain the fiber optic cable, outer jacket, coupling assembly, metal ring, pins (PIN pins), and dust cap.
The male connector is contains two PIN pins, the female connector does not.
The connection between the MPO connectors is made by precise alignment of the PIN pins, and a “click” should be heard to ensure that it locks with the adapter when docked.
4、Three wire sequences for MPO?
Type A:The fiber cores of both ends of the patch cord are arranged in the same position, i.e. 1 at one end corresponds to 1 at the other end, and 12 at one end corresponds to 12 at the other end. the key direction of both ends is opposite, key up corresponds to key down.
Type B:The fiber cores at both ends of the jumper cable are arranged in opposite positions, i.e. 1 at one end corresponds to 12 at the other end, and 12 at one end corresponds to 1 at the other end. The key direction at both ends is the same, i.e. key up corresponds to key up, and key down corresponds to key down.
Type C:MPO patch cords of type C are adjacent to a pair of core positions crossed, i.e., one end of the core 1 corresponds to the other end of the 2, one end of the core 12 at the other end of the 11. The two ends of the key direction is also opposite, key up corresponds to the key down.

6、MPO Patch Cord Advantages?
(1) Small size enables the wiring aperture to be increased, thus substantially increasing the wiring density and saving space.
(2) Modular design, plug and play, saving installation time.
(3) According to different configuration requirements, corresponding structure can be selected to meet different wiring needs.
(4) Excellent optical and mechanical properties, low insertion loss in high-speed network environment.
MPO fiber optic connectors, fiber optic patch cords provide a simple and easy to manage fiber optic cabling solutions, widely used in the need for high-density integrated fiber optic lines FTTH and data centers.
